The next day we were ready. We were pumped. The puppet theatre was awesome — Dad had got completely carried away and painted it black with silver stencilled paw marks on it. He hadn’t done quite as good a job as I might have done — the paint was a bit drippy in places — but I didn’t want to criticise his work. Besides, with all the rehearsing, I’d run out of time to decorate it myself. The whole box had fitted nicely into the van and now here we were in the mall, ready to set up and see if anyone laughed at us (in a good way). It would be either the biggest success or the hugest failure of my whole twelve years. I kept stroking Masher to keep him calm, tucking his head under my chin. He patted my collar bone encouragingly with a paw. ‘We’ll be just fine,’ he whispered.
